The Problem
One of the largest operators in the Permian Basin needed to get a new application landed. They decided to secure the cable to the ESP and tubing with traditional banding. No surprise, but soon after the bands were installed, they had to pull the well due to grounding issues.
Unfortunately, their well had an inclination of 17% and DLS of over 3 degrees. When they pulled it, their cable was turned into this birdsnest!
65% of the bands they installed had broken and been left downhole due to grinding and friction caused by sideload. They had to stop the operation and fish the broken bands out of the hole. They also had to send this huge expensive cable to the scrap yard.
